Internship Period: June-July 2016

A graduate of Ateneo de Manila High School, Javier Ocampo (or Javi) joined Kickstart fresh off his second year at Fordham University in New York City taking up Bachelor of Arts in International Political Economy. He is set to graduate in May 2018.

While in Kickstart, Javi interviewed startup founders, investors, and other key players in the #startupPH ecosystem for the official Kickstart position paper he wrote in response to the Startup Bill, a legislation authored by Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Trade, Commerce, and Entrepreneurship. Javi also enjoyed learning the art of the deal when he successfully closed a coffee partnership for a significant Kickstart event.

Outside of Kickstart, Javi loves cooking steaks (important lifeskill!), spending time as part-time barista (again: lifeskill!), and being a triathlete – for two years, he was a member of the Philippine National Triathlon Team.

Rafael Dimaano
University of Pennsylvania (USA)

Internship period: June-July 2015

A graduate of Ateneo de Manila High School, Red joined Kickstart fresh off his first year at the University of Pennsylvania taking up a dual degree program in Engineering (major in Computer Science) and Economics. He is part of the Management and Technology Program co-managed by The Wharton School and the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Red worked closely with Kickstart portfolio company Kalibrr and when asked what it was like for him engaging startups while a member of the Kickstart team, this is what he had to say:

“What I enjoyed most about my time with Kickstart was that I was able to get decent exposure to both the tech startup and financial industries as well as understand how both business and technology skills interplay to cause innovation in Manila. I feel that after working for Kickstart, I now want to maximize my business and computer science education to actually help the Philippines.”

Where is he now: University of Pennsylvania (USA)

“I’m currently back in school as sophomore in the Jerome Fisher Management and Technology Program between The Wharton School and the School of Engineering and Applied Science.”

Francesca de Larrazabal
Macquarie University (AUSTRALIA)

Internship period: July-August 2014

Chesca de Larrazabal worked closely with Kickstart portfolio company Trueproperty.ph where she handled marketing, user acquisition and engagement assignments. When asked what it was like for her engaging startups while part of the Kickstart team, this is what she had to say:

“My internship at Kickstart actually had a great influence on my decision to pursue a path towards, and eventually land a job in digital marketing. Working with an online startup exposed me to the world of data driven marketing, and taught me the importance of drawing value from customer data in order to optimize the performance of your online campaigns; this is just one of the important skills I learned at Kickstart that I now use on a daily basis in my current job. The insights, expertise and support of the Kickstart team creates such a conducive work environment for the startups – it’s truly an exciting and inspiring space to be a part of.”

Where is she nowOptus, a telco in Sydney, Australia.

“After my internship at Kickstart, I went on to completing my Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. Upon graduating I was able to land a position at Optus here in Sydney as a digital marketing coordinator, wherein I facilitate campaigns across online channels and product categories.”

Adrian Yuen
Cornell University (USA)

Internship period: September 2013

Adrian worked in Kickstart between finishing his undergraduate at Cornell University and beginning his masters at the London School of Economics. While in Kickstart, Adrian worked closely with founders of Kickstart’s portfolio companies to identify value-adding characteristics in tech startups, which can be used in future investment decisions. When asked what it was like for him engaging startups, this is what he had to say:

The tech startup industry in the Philippines is exciting because many economic sectors are primed for disruption and improvement. However, for all their hype, startups largely remain a ‘black box’ for investors, making them high-risk. It was interesting to work closely with the portfolio companies and learn their history, strategy, and operations to identify indicators of future performance, where traditional methods may fail. Additionally, Kickstart gave me the opportunity to network with the larger tech environment, giving me exposure to the work culture and the great efforts being made to promote local technology. It’s an experience that you get out as much as you put in.

Where is he now: Deloitte Consulting Malaysia Sdn Bhd. in Kuala Lumpur.

The exposure and critical-thinking skills I took away from Kickstart were instrumental in my decision to enter consulting. I now work as a strategy and operations (S&O) business analyst within Deloitte Consulting Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

Phil Morle
Co-Founder and CEO of Pollenizer ; founder of Spreets; ex-CTO of Kazaa.

Phil is the CEO of Pollenizer: he helps entrepreneurs and corporations innovate using Pollenizer’s “startup science.” He has learned that startups have nothing at the start other than a good theory and a fire in the belly. It is Team Pollenizer’s job to turn that theory into fact; a working business model that the world can see.

Today, he has worked with over 200 startups and has co-founded more than 30. He loves to see the patterns of success and failure that emerge in this context as well as making things from scratch with limited resources. He says it’s slightly addictive! Before Pollenizer, he was the CTO at Kazaa, which was one of the massive P2P businesses early 2000s. It signed up millions of users at any one time, thus learning a lot about creating value led by consumers. While all these can take time and keeps him busy, he loves to hang with his family, run, cook, ride the BMX (#midlifecrisis), travel.

Micole Bautista
Managing Director, EyeLevel Australia

Micole’s 23+ year corporate career has led him to senior roles in Sales, Marketing, and HR around the world, across a range of companies in Consumer Packaged Goods, Biotechnology, Retail, and Agriculture. In 2010, Micole set up EyeLevel, a company that builds plug-and-play sales academies for large corporates in Asia, Australia, Europe, and the US.

All told, Micole is pretty good with customer strategies and sales capability development, which is why he’s building a company for his clients to take advantage of that know-how. That said, Micole is in a hurry to debrief, cajole, encourage, clue in, dare, and push as many entrepreneurs as possible to learn from his experience and do better than he ever did.

Tom Blackman
Asia-Pacific Sales Head, Zendesk

Tom manages Zendesk Sales & Account Management for Asia. He works with customers from various industries ranging from small-to-medium enterprises to blue chip organizations; and works closely with Kickstart Ventures as Mentor to their portfolio companies, as well.
